Clayscapes is a tribute to clay's ubiquitous presence in our lives, and to the powerful metaphorical and spiritual role that it can play. The Everson's famous collection of ceramics is filled with works that explore the landscape—from artist Robert Arneson's monumental celebration of California's mountainous landscape to Uruguayan-born Lidya Buzio's earthy vessels adorned with the skyline of her adopted home in New York City. The collection contains many commercially produced souvenir plates and pitchers meant to commemorate and memorialize specific places. These wares are a distinctive part of the Museum's collection, and they provide inspiration for contemporary artists such as Paul Scott, who makes commemorative plates that reflect the ways that humans have altered the landscape and exploited its resources.

As artists continue to shape clay, Clayscapes recognizes the ways in which clay shapes us. The Everson's ceramic collection is filled with work that documents the joys and sorrows of humankind's relationship with the Earth. This exhibition pays tribute to the powerful connection between artists and the world around them.

Akwesasne Mohawk artist Natasha Smoke Santiago has spent the last two decades mastering traditional Haudenosaunee pottery techniques. Her unique work incorporates storytelling, activism, and the exploration of native foodways, including experiments with seedkeeping and collaborations with Indigenous chefs. The exhibition's title, O'tá:ra (pronounced oh-da-law) takes its name from a Mohawk phrase that means both "our clay" and "our clan," a testament to clay's foundational role in Haudenosaunee culture.

In 2021, photographer Ben Altman and his wife bought 38 acres of land next to their home in rural Danby, NY, to prevent logging and development. He recognized that the title to this beautiful land originated in genocide. More than 200 years ago the Cayuga, one of the Six Nations of the Haudenosaunee Confederacy, were violently and fraudulently dispersed from the homelands they had occupied and nurtured for over 10,000 years. Despite two centuries of genocidal repression and cultural suppression, they remain resilient, but live almost entirely in diaspora, in Oklahoma, Ontario, and scattered across North America.

"I Own This Stolen Land" is a multidisciplinary project that seeks to acknowledge and take responsibility for the theft of the land; understand the natural systems, economic pressures, ecological stresses, and options for stewardship of the site; invite Cayuga people to visit and to undertake traditional and arts activities, building trust between them and communities in Tompkins County; and develop scalable models for cooperative access to ancestral land.

"Suit Up! A Look At Syracuse Sporting Uniforms Through The Years" highlights the wide array of sporting uniforms donned by athletes in Onondaga County at every level of competition going back more than 120 years.

Utilizing OHA's extensive collection of uniforms, programs, and photographs, and the generosity of the Syracuse Mets and Syracuse Crunch, in addition to the several local collectors, this exhibition offers something for every sports fan. Highlights include signed memorabilia from Ernie Davis, Syracuse Orange Football star and the first African American to win the Heisman Trophy in 1961, as well as game-worn jerseys from Crunch, Mets, and Syracuse Orange Basketball players, to name just a few of the incredible items on display in this exhibit.

We're opening the doors to our collections and displaying an eclectic collection of unique objects and archival items. As part of our mission to preserve our community's past, OHA curatorial and archival staff has been collecting the tangible local history from donors near and far. Many of those donations from the past 5 years have been gathered together into one exhibit for your viewing pleasure, and to showcase the generosity of our donors.

This exhibit includes unusual, fascinating, and amusing items recently donated to OHA. Museum objects and archival items to be displayed include photographs of the Syracuse Nationals professional basketball team and other local sports team items, Loew's State Theater (now Landmark Theater) architectural drawings from 1926-1927, and story boards from the local TV show The Magic Toy Shop. Other items include furniture made by the Syracuse Ornamental Company (SYROCO), artwork, wicker furniture, clothing and accessories, children's toys, as well as a television set and a Play-Talk Electronic Toy made by General Electric at Electronics Park in Liverpool, NY.

These are just some of the historical treasures that will captivate guests of all interests and ages, so start reliving our community's past, and come Look At What We Got!

The Everson Museum houses a significant collection of enamels by artists including June Schwarcz, Edward H. Winter, and Ellamarie and Jackson Woolley. Several leading ceramists — for example, Carleton Ball and Jade Snow Wong — also worked in enamel. Exhibition spaces that show ceramics have often championed enamels too, including the Everson's own Ceramic National exhibitions. After waning in popularity in the mid-20th century, enamels are enjoying a comeback thanks to new technologies and the proliferation of community studios and makerspaces that provide shared equipment and knowledge.

100 Bowls by David MacDonald

David R. MacDonald is professor emeritus of ceramics at Syracuse University whose bowls and other ceramic vessels have won national acclaim for their beauty and utility. His work, based on African themes, is featured at the Everson Museum and in many other venues around the country.

David has generously donated 100 of his (food-friendly) bowls to support the work of the Onondaga Earth Corps, a 501c3 nonprofit organization dedicated to teaching young people in Syracuse how to plant trees and do landscaping while gaining business and personal skills.

"According to the Laws of Chance" is a subtitle included in many works by the Dadaist painter Jean Arp that describes his systematic yet chance-driven method of creating his simple and playful paintings. Arp would let torn pieces of paper fall to the floor to determine his painting or collage compositions. Although the outcomes are different, Arp's ethos can be found in the work of the photographers selected for this group exhibition.

The artists in this exhibition — Cheryl Miller, Claire A. Warden, Jaclyn Wright, Josh Thorson, Kyle Tata, Louis Chavez, and Will Stith, and Light Work's collection artists, Cecil McDonald, Jr., James Welling, Peter Finnemore, and Rita Hammond — are using and defining chance as a core element of their largely divergent practices. The image-makers in this exhibition embrace the unpredictable and find ways to amplify chance for conceptual and creative purposes. The results are surprising expressions of each artist's voice. Together they showcase the wide-ranging use of chance and highlight it as a vital tool in contemporary photographic practice.

This program is a mixture of high energy compositions, spanning the last 100 years of chamber repertoire for piano and guitar duo. This includes cutting edge music written by David Mitchell, Luciana Bigazzi/Maurizio Colonna, and Malcolm Arnold, in addition to original compositions written by the pianist of the duo, Robert Luke Benedict.

The Muse Duo employs the use of more modern instrumentation through use of the electric guitar and synthesizer in two works featured in the program. This program is a striking, engaging, yet accessible example of modern chamber music for guitar and piano duo.

The Everson's famous collection of ceramics is filled with works that explore the landscape—from artist Robert Arneson's monumental celebration of California's mountainous landscape to Uruguayan-born Lidya Buzio's earthy vessels adorned with the skyline of her adopted home in New York City. The collection contains many commercially produced souvenir plates and pitchers meant to commemorate and memorialize specific places. These wares are a distinctive part of the Museum's collection, and they provide inspiration for contemporary artists such as Paul Scott, who makes commemorative plates that reflect the ways that humans have altered the landscape and exploited its resources.

As artists continue to shape clay, Clayscapes recognizes the ways in which clay shapes us. The Everson's ceramic collection is filled with work that documents the joys and sorrows of humankind's relationship with the Earth. This exhibition pays tribute to the powerful connection between artists and the world around them.

In 2021, photographer Ben Altman and his wife bought 38 acres of land next to their home in rural Danby, NY, to prevent logging and development. He recognized that the title to this beautiful land originated in genocide. More than 200 years ago the Cayuga, one of the Six Nations of the Haudenosaunee Confederacy, were violently and fraudulently dispersed from the homelands they had occupied and nurtured for over 10,000 years. Despite two centuries of genocidal repression and cultural suppression, they remain resilient, but live almost entirely in diaspora, in Oklahoma, Ontario, and scattered across North America.

"I Own This Stolen Land" is a multidisciplinary project that seeks to acknowledge and take responsibility for the theft of the land; understand the natural systems, economic pressures, ecological stresses, and options for stewardship of the site; invite Cayuga people to visit and to undertake traditional and arts activities, building trust between them and communities in Tompkins County; and develop scalable models for cooperative access to ancestral land.

We're opening the doors to our collections and displaying an eclectic collection of unique objects and archival items. As part of our mission to preserve our community's past, OHA curatorial and archival staff has been collecting the tangible local history from donors near and far. Many of those donations from the past 5 years have been gathered together into one exhibit for your viewing pleasure, and to showcase the generosity of our donors.

This exhibit includes unusual, fascinating, and amusing items recently donated to OHA. Museum objects and archival items to be displayed include photographs of the Syracuse Nationals professional basketball team and other local sports team items, Loew's State Theater (now Landmark Theater) architectural drawings from 1926-1927, and story boards from the local TV show The Magic Toy Shop. Other items include furniture made by the Syracuse Ornamental Company (SYROCO), artwork, wicker furniture, clothing and accessories, children's toys, as well as a television set and a Play-Talk Electronic Toy made by General Electric at Electronics Park in Liverpool, NY.

These are just some of the historical treasures that will captivate guests of all interests and ages, so start reliving our community's past, and come Look At What We Got!

The Everson Museum houses a significant collection of enamels by artists including June Schwarcz, Edward H. Winter, and Ellamarie and Jackson Woolley. Several leading ceramists — for example, Carleton Ball and Jade Snow Wong — also worked in enamel. Exhibition spaces that show ceramics have often championed enamels too, including the Everson's own Ceramic National exhibitions. After waning in popularity in the mid-20th century, enamels are enjoying a comeback thanks to new technologies and the proliferation of community studios and makerspaces that provide shared equipment and knowledge.

Room to Spare is a chamber duo made up of composer/performers David Leach and Julia Connor. Combining historical folk music from Cape Breton, Scotland, and Ireland, 18th-century settings of traditional Scottish tunes, and well-known Baroque pieces, this lively, wide-ranging program explores the deep connections between aural folk traditions and the Baroque canon. Founded in 2018 by Lydia Becker, Julia Connor, and Sarah Douglass, the Berwick Fiddle Consort (BFC) performs historical folk music on period instruments. Approaching fiddle tunes from a multi-faceted perspective that combines baroque violin technique, aural folk traditions, and study of historical manuscripts, BFC offers an exciting counterpoint to the traditional canon of historical repertoire and the classical music experience.
