Reclaimed: The Art of Recology

Reclaimed: The Art of Recology presents a survey of 33 artists who were selected to participate in Recology's Artist-in-Residence program, which began in 1990. Armed with safety gear and a shopping cart, each of these artists have scavenging privileges in the Public Reuse and Recycling Area—what most artists refer to as "The Big Store"—to recycle and reclaim the discarded waste as imagined art objects. Through introspective, playful, and highly original explorations, the artists reveal the hidden stories our rubbish tells us about our complex relationship with the world, while highlighting the need to create sustainable communities.

Whether a landscape, cityscape, still life, or representation of the human body, these works show how each artist's reality is impacted by their lived experience. Separated by genre and installed "salon-style" — a term inspired by the 18th and 19th century Paris Salons, where paintings were hung from floor to ceiling, covering every inch of wall space — the dense arrangement invites close looking and visual comparison, encouraging viewers to find connections across time, style, and subject matter.

The Everson has a long history of working with important contemporary artists. Over the last 58 years, the Everson has produced solo exhibitions for Yoko Ono, Morris Louis, Joan Mitchell, Bill Viola, William Wegman, Carrie Mae Weems, and a host of artists who loom large on the world stage. No exhibition in the Everson's history can compare to New Works in Clay by Contemporary Painters and Sculptors, a 1976 exhibition that involved bringing well-known painters and sculptors to Syracuse to produce a body of work in ceramics. The project was the brainchild of Margie Hughto, who served as both a professor at Syracuse University and as a curator at the Everson.

For the first time in 50 years, the Everson will bring together ceramic works by the original 11 participants, as well as works by artists like Kenneth Noland and Mary Frank who participated in subsequent projects in 1978 and 1981. Five decades later, it is not unusual for clay to be a part of an artist's repertoire. New Works in Clay explores how the Everson broke down barriers between art and craft and set the stage for the current ceramic renaissance in the art world.

Experience the operatic heights of this grand, Tony Award-winning musical adaptation from Claude-Michel Schönberg and Alain Boublil, as Jean Valjean, a former convict, is relentlessly pursued by Javert, an unforgiving police officer, while he struggles to lead an honorable life and care for the orphan Cosette amidst the growing revolution of 19th-century France. Featuring scores of classic and beloved songs, including "I Dreamed a Dream," "Master of the House," "Bring Him Home," "Empty Chairs at Empty Tables," and "One Day More."

Oliver escapes to London and finds acceptance amongst a group of petty thieves and pickpockets led by the elderly Fagin. When Oliver is captured for a theft that he did not commit, the benevolent victim, Mr. Brownlow takes him in. Fearing the safety of his hideout, Fagin employs the sinister Bill Sikes and the sympathetic Nancy to kidnap him back, threatening Oliver's chances of discovering the true love of a family.

Experience the operatic heights of this grand, Tony Award-winning musical adaptation from Claude-Michel Schönberg and Alain Boublil, as Jean Valjean, a former convict, is relentlessly pursued by Javert, an unforgiving police officer, while he struggles to lead an honorable life and care for the orphan Cosette amidst the growing revolution of 19th-century France. Featuring scores of classic and beloved songs, including "I Dreamed a Dream," "Master of the House," "Bring Him Home," "Empty Chairs at Empty Tables," and "One Day More."

The streets of Victorian England come to life as Oliver, a malnourished orphan in a workhouse, becomes the neglected apprentice of an undertaker. Oliver escapes to London and finds acceptance amongst a group of petty thieves and pickpockets led by the elderly Fagin. When Oliver is captured for a theft that he did not commit, the benevolent victim, Mr. Brownlow takes him in. Fearing the safety of his hideout, Fagin employs the sinister Bill Sikes and the sympathetic Nancy to kidnap him back, threatening Oliver's chances of discovering the true love of a family.
